 Dr. Nico Afanasenko is a 2001 Graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic, the original school of Chiropractic started by Dr. David Daniel Palmer, son of Chiropractic's inventor Dr. B.J. Palmer.
Dr. Nico grew up just outside of Washington, DC, and continued on to Boston University where he earned a degree in Political Science and Pre-Med. He played 10 years of collegiate and semi-pro rugby, and has played competitive tennis since childhood. Currently, Dr. Nico is training for his second year of triathlons and focuses his personal training on swimming, biking and running when not playing tennis on the South Shore and Cape Cod. Drawing on his extensive sports background and training in sports injury, Dr. Nico enjoys working with athletes to enhance performance and improve conditioning. After completing his clinical experience at Palmer College, Dr. Nico travelled to Budapest, Hungary, where he took part in a free clinic set up to treat people without proper health care, many of whom had never been exposed to Western medecine or Chiropractic care before. In Hungary, Dr. Nico studied the differences in care and social concepts in medecine found outside of the United States. Dr. Nico finished his clinical experience in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, where he studied under Dr. John Ediss at Carson-Tahoe Chiropractic center. It was in Lake Tahoe that Dr. Nico expanded his knowledge base in sports medecine and family practice. While working closely with Dr. Ediss, Dr. Nico also worked as a volunteer ski patroller at Heavenly Ski Resort, the largest ski resort in Nevada or California, to practice sports injury and the use of on-site emergency care and first aid. After two years out west, Dr. Nico moved to New York City, where he lived and worked in three clinics. Dr. Nico managed a mid-town clinic specializing in ergonomics and business clients; he worked in a practice on the Upper East Side of Manhattan catering to industrial workers and blue-collar clientel looking to supplement their busy schedules with chiropractic care; and a health clinic in the Bronx by Yankees Stadium which helped families and people with low incomes or poor health coverage to stay healthy. Before moving north to open his own practice, Dr. Nico travelled to Japan where he met with Japanese doctors and chiropractors to study the different techniques and methods of health care in the Far East.  After learning how to manage different clinical settings and learning the real-world business of chiropractic, Dr. Nico and his wife decided to start their family and focus their efforts on caring for other families in a small-town setting. Having grown up visiting his grandparents on Cape Cod, and after falling in love with the comfort and access of Boston during his collegiate experience, the only sensible choice seemed to be to find a spot between Fenway Park and the quiet of Cape Cod. When Dr. Nico saw an opportunity to re-build a stuggling practice on the South Shore, the peaceful beaches of Scituate seemed a perfect setting for creating an environment in which patients have easy access to Chiropractic care without losing the benefits of knowing their doctor personally.
Fresh Start Chiropractic opened in June of 2003, and has grown into the go-to clinic for residents ranging from Hull to Duxbury, treating families with respect, integrity and honesty. Dr. Nico plans to expand his offices to accomodate more patients and improve a health care system in the United States that is sorely in need of a face-lift, but has no plans of leaving his new-found home community. His three children are growing fast, and the only thing Dr. Nico loves more than helping his patients is taking a break to play with the kids. |
